Premier League 2009 - Round Up

Having returned from my winter break and begun to recover from jet-lag, snow-lag, excess food-lag and various other lags I find that all teams with the exception of Stoke have completed their septets for the new season. Perhaps the Potters intend to go with just six riders only. There have been no reports yet of any season affecting injuries sustained by riders riding abroad and no-one seem to have changed their minds about returning to Britain for the new season (although a quick look at the weather in Britain over the last few weeks might cause them to change their minds).

It seems that there will now be the lull before the storm when speedway bursts into life in the middle of March. Fans of the various Premier League teams will have assessed their team’s chances and many postings can be found on how everyone thinks they’ll do this coming season. Everyone is, of course, hoping their team will be tenth in the table compounded by the Speedway Star in their revue of 2009.

Since I left these shores to don a grass skirt and lei (you’ll maybe need to look that one up!) it seems that

Birmingham have signed Marek Mroz on a 3.50 average for one of the reserve berths with the other being shared between Ben Taylor and Jack Roberts.

King’s Lynn may have to find a replacement for John Oliver who looks likely to miss at least the start of the season next month for the Stars for personal reasons.

Newport have somehow managed to get Chris Kerr’s average re-assessed to 6.47 which allows him to slot into the Wasps side.

Rye House have confirmed that Andrew Silver will indeed ride at number 7 on a 5.00 point average. (I wonder if Len Silver will don his old white leather boots again next season in another age-defying come back?!)

Scun-thorpe seem to have problems with their long-term future due to their proposed neighbours. The Scorpions are urging support from all quarters to prevent the local council from approving a plan to allow a ‘travellers’ site’ to be built next to the Eddie Wright raceway.

Somerset completed their side with the signings of young Australian Justin Sedgmen on a 5.00 point assessed average and Tom Brown on a 3.00 point average. Jay Herne and Brendan Johnson share the other reserve slot.

Stoke We all wait with baited breath.

It seems that that nearly concludes matters. Let battle commence in a month’s time.

Premier League 2009 - Round Up

Well it seems that I spoke/posted too soon as Stoke finally announced their final rider for next season to complete their team.

They have signed Glen Phillips who rode for the Isle of Wight last year on a 6.39 average to fill the one remaining vacant spot in all the Premier League teams for next season.

The Potters complete line up now reads: Lee Complin 7.27, Jason Bunyan 7.08, Glen Phillips 6.39, Tom P Madsen 6.04, Phil Morris 5.88, Klaus Jakobsen 4.87 and Jesper Kristiansen 4.67 for a team total of 42.20

Premier League 2009 - Round Up

Just when things seem cut and dried along comes a change.

King’s Lynn: have reacted to the non-availability of John Oliver for the new season by signing Emiliano Sanchez.

King's Lynn team boss Rob Lyon believes his club have unearthed a gem in the Argentinian racer.

The 31-year-old former Birmingham and Hull rider has been drafted into Lynn's 2009 line up after John Oliver was ruled out for personal reasons.

“Emiliano has good pedigree and is a great all round rider who will score well at away tracks,” said Lyon. “In all honesty I can't believe he wasn't snapped up by another club. In 2005 he finished the season as Hull's number 1 rider on an 8.15 average and in 2006 he moved to Sheffield and finished on a 7.38 average.

“Then In 2007 he rode for Birmingham and achieved a 7.14 average including bonus points but unfortunately that winter he had a serious crash in Argentina and lost his spleen. Amazingly he still returned to British speedway in 2008 for the Stoke Potters, but he didn't get on well there and mid-season transferred across to Scunthorpe, there he finished the season on a high recapturing some of his pre-crash form.

“I've no doubt he has a lot to offer us and with another rider in the team having so much potential to improve their average it really is going to be fascinating to see who will be at reserve for the Stars after the first set of official averages come out.”

Sanchez admits he just wants an injury-free season after originally missing out on a domestic spot for the year.

“I love racing speedway and it was very sad that I didn't have a team place for 2009, that is why I am so happy King's Lynn have given me this opportunity,” he said. “I now feel I am over my bad injury and had a good winter racing back in Argentina, I beat Kyle Legault and Lee Complin on quite a few occasions and believe I can get back to my best this season - especially with the support of the fantastic team and management at King's Lynn. I am very happy.”

King's Lynn Stars 2009 team now reads:

Tomas Topinka 9.37, Christian Henry 6.91, Chris Schramm 5.76, Emiliano Sanchez 5.58, Kozza Smith 5.38, Darcy Ward 5.00, Jan Graversen 4.18. Team total: 42.18.
