Premier League: Redcar 51 (3 points), Stoke 42 (0 points) .
Team changes: Stoke again used Rider Replacement (R/R) for Hynek Stichauer and had Kyle Legault as a guest at number 5.
After their excellent win against King’s Lynn in their last home match, Redcar were looking to make it two on the trot against the Stoke Potters who had pushed Newport hard in their away match on Sunday.
It took a while to sort out the opening heat. Charles Wright touched the tapes and was excluded. He was replaced by Tomas Suchanek. Then Lubos Tomicek developed a problem and was excluded this time for failing to beat the two minute time allowance so he was replaced by Jan Graversen. Finally Gary Havelock won the race while Ricky Wells suffered an engine failure on the first lap and Jan Graversen passed Tomas Suchanek for a 4-2 to the Bears. Heat 2 was less eventful as Lee Smart gated to a win over a hard challenging Peter Juul for a 3-3. Ben Wilson and Emiliano Sanchez gated in heat 3 but Taylor Poole passed Sanchez before developing an engine failure which saw the Bears race off for a 5-1 ahead of Ricky Wells and a six point lead. James Grieves then won heat 4 but, with Suchanek stuck at the back, Legault and Smart finished second and third to take the score to 15-9.
Stoke got two points back in heat 5 with a 2-4 from Tomicek and Smart. Indeed Sanchez had to reel in and pass Smart to avoid a 1-5 after Wilson had suffered an engine failure. Redcar responded with two 4-2s on the trot in heats 6 and 7 with wins from Havelock and Grieves to open an eight point lead but a 1-5 in heat 8 brought an abrupt end to their progress. Kyle Legault and Lee Smart did the damage gating to the maximum heat win ahead of Tomas Suchanek and Charles Wright. The score now stood at 26-22 and it was all to race for.
Legault won again in heat 9 but the Bears forced a 3-3 with Sanchez and Wilson ahead of Lee Smart. Home worries were eased with two more 4-2s in heats 11 and 12 with Havelock and Grieves once again instrumental by winning the heats. Havelock’s win in heat 10 ahead of Taylor Poole was particularly impressive as the Redcar captain had to reel in and pass the flying Potter. Ben Wilson gated to win heat 12 for a shared race and the score was then 40-32 with Redcar looking good for all three points.
The Bears then scored a 4-2 in heat 13 with another Havelock win over Kyle Legault and third place from James Grieves but it was a Pyrrhic victory as the Potters now ten points down were able to give Taylor Poole a Tactical Ride in heat 14. Sure enough he won the race after a terrific tussle with Emiliano Sanchez which saw the riders pass and repass each other. Lee Smart added the third place point ahead of Juul so Stoke scored a 2-7 which cut the gap to just five points with one race left. Although Redcar had secured victory the third match point was very much up for grabs. All was well though for the Bears as Havelock and Grieves ended with a 5-1 from heat 15 to win all three match points with a nine point victory - their second on the trot.
Scorers: Redcar – Gary Havelock 15 (5) (full maximum), James Grieves 12+1 (5), Emiliano Sanchez 8+1 (4), Ben Wilson 7+1 (4), Peter Juul 4 (4), Tomas Suchanek 3+1 (5), Charles Wright 2 (4).
Stoke – Kyle Legault 13 (6), Lee Smart 8+3 (7), Taylor Poole 8 (5) (incl a 6 point TR), Lubos Tomicek 5 (4), Ricky Wells 5 (5), Jan Graversen 3+1 (4)..
Premier League: Sheffield 56 (3 points), King’s Lynn 37 (0 points) .
Team changes: Both teams were at full strength
In heat 1 the riders all arrived at the first bend together and Ricky Ashworth and Kevin Doolan, off the outside gates, crashed into the fence. Although Ashworth recovered, Doolan wasn’t so lucky and was withdrawn from the meeting, a hammer blow for the Stars. Chris Mills replaced him in the rerun of the race. However Kozza Smith came out to win the rerun from Hugh Skidmore and Ricky Ashworth to share the race. Chris Mills split the home reserves in heat 2 for a 4-2 to the Tigers but Josef Franc and Richard Hall led Joe Haines home in heat 3 for a 5-1 and six point lead for the home side before Josh Auty produced his usual party piece by coming from the back to pass Tomas Topinka then Chris Mills to win heat 4 for a 3-3 which took the score to 15-9.
Franc and Hall produced another 5-1 in heat 5 which increased Sheffield’s lead to 10 points then Hugh Skidmore beat Tomas Topinka in heat 6 with Ricky Ashworth unable to pass him too for second in heat 6. The 4-2 increased the home side’s lead to 12 points so Joe Haines took a Tactical Ride in heat 7. He won it too beating Josh Auty who this time had no answer to the fast starting Star. This produced a 3-6 for the visitors who now trailed by nine points. Kozza Smith fell in heat 8 causing the race to be rerun without him but Chris Mills came to the rescue for King’s Lynn by winning from Lambert and Skidmore for a shared race which took the score to 30-21.
The Tigers took a 4-2 in heat 9 which was won by Richard Hall. Tomas Topinka held off a late challenge from Josef Franc for second but the lead had stretched to eleven points. Joe Haines gated to win heat 10 from Ashworth and Skidmore to share the race but Sheffield took a 4-2 from heat 11 which was rerun after Chris Mills crashed into Paul Cooper and was excluded. Josh Auty passed Kozza Smith to win the race while Paul Cooper picked up the gift third place point. The Stars now trailed by thirteen points but there was no second TR in heat 12 which Josef Franc won from Mills and Mallett for a 3-3 and score of 44-31.
Tomas Topinka took the TR in heat 13 but could do nothing to avoid Ashworth and Auty racing off for a 5-1 which finally settled the outcome. Chris Mills fell in heat 14 and was excluded from the rerun in which Joe Haines touched the tapes and went from 15 metres back. Richard Hall won the race but Joe Haines made up the handicap to pass Paul Cooper for second giving the Tigers a 4-2. In the last race Richard Hall was out and won again from Haines and Smith as Josef Franc suffered an engine failure.
Scorers: Sheffield – Richard Hall 13+2 (5) (paid maximum), Josh Auty 10+1 (4), Josef Franc 10 (5), Ricky Ashworth 7+1 (4), Hugh Skidmore 7+1 (4), Paul Cooper 6+1 (4), Simon Lambert 3 (4).
King‘s Lynn – Joe Haines 14 (5) (incl a 6 point TR), Chris Mills 9 (7), Tomas Topinka 6+1 (4), Kozza Smith 6+1 (5), Darren Mallett 2+1 (6), Casper Wortmann 0 (3).
