Heat 9: Justin Sedgeman assumed the lead, Kyle Newman assumed second place, Karl Mason was cruising in third and our man Tim Webster gated last and kept going backwards. He tailed off in the third lap looking down at his machine but crossed the line like a good sportsman into the fourth lap in case one of the others fell.
A poor result for us.
Bristol 3 Somerset 2 Weymouth 1 Exeter 0
18 Bristol 15 Weymouth 13 Exeter 7 Somerset
Bristol were looking strong favourites now.

Heat 10: Kyle Hughes was in this one - remember that he entertained us all by passing two people in his first race and led for most of his second race before falling while in the lead. What would this one find from him?
He gated last - this was looking like another poor Exeter performance.
Right in front of us he passed on the inside to go from 4th to 3rd lap 1.
Right in front of us he passed on the inside to go from 3rd to 2nd lap 2.
Was he going to ride the perfect race and do the entertaining right in front of the Exeter supporters? He was going great guns already.
Ryan Sedgemen was too far in front to catch but 4th to 2nd is good enough for me.
Bristol 3 Exeter 2 Somerset 1 Weymouth 0
21 Bristol 15 Exeter 15 Weymouth 8 Somerset
We were now competing with Weymouth for second place.

Heat 11: Terry Day was in this one - Exeter's only heat winner of the entire season - he must be able to produce something.
Terry gated third and the race settled in one of those from the gate races with all riders equidistant all the way round. Identical set-ups I reckon. Either that or it was because the track had just been watered and graded in the way that the Danes do best.
Weymouth 3 Bristol 2 Exeter 1 Somerset 0
23 Bristol 18 Weymouth 16 Exeter 8 Somerset
Bristol looked unassailable at this point.

Heat 12: The announcer stated that there would be a kids race around the track after this heat and entrants should gather near the start line. We had Gary Cottham racing for us and heading for the start line. He would have been better in the kids race.
He ran a last place.
Weymouth 3 Bristol 2 Somerset 1 Exeter 0
25 Bristol 21 Weymouth 16 Exeter 9 Somerset
And now for the Interval!

THE INTERVAL
A line-up of kids of all ages gathered at the start line. They kept coming from the crowd to join the throng. It is for entertainment purposes so the promoter told us that he was going to run with his son.
The tapes were up and they were off. Varying ages, varying speeds, varying abilities. A lad who looked like a young speedway rider - is it because they cannot afford to eat that they look like that - took the lead and held it all the way to the third bend. A lad in stripes came on strong round the third and fourth bends but the thin one added a sprint from the fourth bend to the line to take the win from the front.
The promoter ran across the centre green - why do adults always cheat, ay kids? he joined his son on the back straight and accompanied him home.
We loved the tiny tots at the back who had only completed half a lap when the winner crossed the line. They never gave up but ran all the way at their own pace.
Speedway is a sport but it is also an entertainment and my Mrs loved watching the kids.
I have the interval entertainment lined up for Haldon racecourse. We have to run a Donkey Derby for the kids.
That way there would be plenty of hoofprints for the riders to avoid after the interval. No! I mean on a little track inside the main circuit.

Heat 13: There is always something special about heat 13 - This is the one where all the best riders get together and produce something special is it not?
Attempt one: Justin Sedgeman fell by himself and was excluded
Attempt two: Luke Priest fell by himself and was excluded
This left the two losing teams, Exeter and Somerset, to slug it out.
GARY COTTHAM produced EXETER'S SECOND WIN OF THE SEASON.
It felt a little empty as there were only two racers and the other one was from the bottom team, but it was AN EXETER WIN. As we have only had two of them ALL SEASON we had to celebrate.
Exeter 3 Somerset 2 Bristol 0 Weymouth 0
25 Bristol 21 Weymouth 19 Exeter 11 Somerset
The positions all seemed settled but we had an outside chance of taking second.

Heat 14: Terry Day representing the Falcons.
Karl Mason headed Terry Day home so we only earned 2 points but more importantly Weymouth earned 3 points while Bristol did not score and that gave the home team some hope.
Weymouth 3 Exeter 2 Somerset 1 Bristol 0
25 Bristol 24 Weymouth 21 Exeter 12 Somerset
Two heats left and we needed two wins with Bristol finishing last both times and at least one exclusion. It was all over for us.

Heat 15: I must have felt it was all over at this point as there are no notes in the program. The wiles of a passionate fan.
Jay Herne won the fourth of his four wins for a MAXIMUM RETURN.
Weymouth 3 Bristol 2 Exeter 1 Somerset 0
Tim Webster was riding for Exeter but I have nothing of note to mention.
27 Bristol 27 Weymouth 22 Exeter 12 Somerset
That left only one heat to go.

Heat 16: The final race was set up nicely for a contest between Weymouth and Bristol. Whichever rider finished ahead won the meeting for his team.
Kyle Newman of Somerset fell in front of us but got up quickly to push his bike onto the centre green. The track staff were all shouting at him to do it as quickly as possible because Lee Herne had assumed the lead.
It was a nice way to finish for Lee Herne before he heads home to Australia. Apparently he cannot get a regular place in any team.
Weymouth 3 Exeter 2 Bristol 1 Somerset 0
Kyle Hughes earned us our second place.
FINAL SCORES
30 Weymouth Wildcats 28 Bristol Bulldogs 24 Exeter Falcons 12 Somerset Giants

AND THAT CONCLUDES EXETER FALCONS RACING FOR 2008
One meeting only but at least we had something to support.
It was not well publicised so do not worry if you did not hear about it until too late.
You should keep your eyes on the website and this forum. If you check them every day you will not miss very much.
NOTE: We spoke to David Short and Tony Lethbridge after the event as well as nodding to Allen Trump who was deep in conversation. There is a level of confidence in that group that I have not seen for a long time. Let us hope it is well founded.
