A junior Exeter Falcons team will be flying again this season thanks to two Exeter enthusiasts and the management of Somerset Speedway.
Alan Spencer, a former County Ground rider, and Robert Doran, the Exeter pits marshal and well known memorabilia collector, approached Rebels co-promoter Garry May with a view to staging second half meetings at the Oaktree Arena.
Agreement was reached and although hopes of a place in the Midland Development League was not forthcoming this year, a number of challenge matches will go ahead.
"We are very grateful to Garry May and Debbie Hancock for allowing us to stage our home meetings at the Oaktree Arena, and hope that plenty of Exeter fans will come along and support us." Said Spencer.
"I have up to ten dates for the Falcons at Somerset. The team will be riding Development League challenge matches after the Rebels' main meetings. Our first match will be against Somerset on Friday 10 April, when the Exeter team will consist of Matt Bates, Richard Andrews, Tyler Govier, and Soul Bully, with a home meeting against Castleford on Friday 24 April.
“Robert and I are also working on a date for an away clash with Castleford, and possibly matches against Poole and Kent. We are waiting to hear back from three or four other tracks.
"Naturally we would love to be racing on our own track and perhaps that may happen in the future, but we know just how hard others have tried to find a new home for the Falcons. Meanwhile we are excited at the prospect of being at Somerset."
Rebels team manager Garry May was equally enthusiastic about a junior Falcons team riding at the OTA;
"We had a one-off 2nd half challenge match involving a junior Exeter team at the Oaktree Arena last season, and it was well received by the fans, and so when Alan approached me regarding extending that into a more formal arrangement, we were more than happy to do so."
"Not only does it keep the name of the Exeter Falcons 'flying' in the public eye, it also means that fans at the Oaktree Arena will have some additional races to look forward on the nights Exeter will be racing in the 2nd half, and hopefully it will encourage a number of ex-Falcons supports to make the trip up to the Oaktree Arena whenever Exeter are involved in the 2nd half of a Somerset home meeting."
