Not all good news for the four lads based in, or very near, Exeter in their first rides for their 2017 teams.
Sadly, Tyler Govier had to retire from the meeting at Plymouth on Friday 14 April after a heat 1 incident. The IOW Warriors' Number 2 was leading on lap 1, but went in to bends 3 and 4 a bit hot and nearly came a cropper. Unfortunately, his team-mate, Ben Wilson, did similar, and although he laid it down, it was not in time to avoid collecting Tyler. For a while, Tyler did not move, but considerable concern on the terraces was eventually allayed as Tyler rose to his feet and walked a little groggily back to the pits, where I suspect the Medic told him he could not continue to race. I gather Tyler has concussion and a very sore shoulder, and may not race for at least a fortnight.
On to the bright side now ! Matt Bates produced a strong showing at Lakeside for the Eastbourne Eagles, scoring 9 points, and notched another 6+1 in the return at Arlington later on Friday. Well done mate - keep it up !
Next, young Henry Atkins. At just 16, he lined up at reserve for Plymouth Devils against the Warriors for his first ever full League outing, and what a controlled and encouraging performance he produced. A total of paid 9 points ( 7+2 ) from his four rides was excellent, and he showed a level of control that several others on show on Friday night did not ! A very promising, and hopefully confidence-boosting, start for him.
Finally, to Richard Andrews. Yes, I know he is based in Bradninch, but it is pretty near Exeter ! A steady 7+1 for the Devils' skipper in his second-string role.
