More disappointment for Devils tonight, as they go down 39 - 51 at home to Cradley Heathens. Again, overall strength saw the visitors prevail, with Danny Ayres scoring a full five-ride maximum. Surely he is already too good to still be riding in the NL ??
Henry Atkins again showed his promise with a 7 + 1 return, including a heat win. A fall / exclusion in one of his five outings was the only blot on the night for him.
Richard Andrews chipped in with 5 + 3, a reasonable score for a second string.
Well done to both lads.

No doubt a much happier Matt Bates tonight, after scoring 8 + 1 in Eastbourne's 48 - 42 home win over Mildenhall Fen Tigers in the National Trophy. Well done Matt. An away point for Tigers though. Not so much joy for Exeter-born Connor Coles, who managed just 3 + 1 for Eagles.

Still no Tyler Govier for the Warriors, but they win 49 - 41 at home to Lakeside Hammers tonight and secure three NL points.
No joy for Devils as their National Trophy meeting at Swindon is rained off late in the day, and their home NL meeting against Birmingham meets a similar fate on the Friday evening.

A summary of the week's happenings. Just come back from a week away.
A 5 + 1 score for Matt Bates in Eastbourne's home 58 - 32 victory over Stoke Potters on 13 May. His night was partly spoiled by a fall and exclusion in one outing, but he did notch a heat win, and also, I gather, fell in his last ride but remounted to take a point.
Still no Tyler Govier for the IOW Warriors, whose meeting on 18 May was abandoned due to rain after only a few races. I have no news as to when Tyler will return to racing.
Update on Connor Coles. He did not ride for Eastbourne on 13 May as he was with his Championship side Newcastle, who won 47 - 43 at Peterborough, but sadly without any points contribution from CC, who had blobs in his three outings. Connor did manage 2 + 2 from four rides in a 45 - 45 draw for Newcastle at home to Edinburgh on 14 May.

I'm afraid it is more bad news as Connor Coles fails to register from four rides for Newcastle in their 58 - 34 home win over Peterborough last weekend. How much longer will they persevere with him ?? I have a bad feeling about it, I must say.

At last, some action to report. The Devils took on a 'select' Swindon Sprockets team in the NL Trophy on Friday night, and secured a resounding 56 - 34 success. ( Sprockets are only contesting the Trophy and so are allowed to invite riders to race for them, within the overall points limit for a NL team ). A 10 + 2 paid maximum for Richard Andrews, and an excellent 9 + 3 for Henry Atkins from 5 rides at reserve. Admittedly, the Sprockets suffered from having to use R/R for Number 5 Darryl Ritchings, and the use of two reserves with no full NL experience, but the Devils wont care about that, I'm sure ! Well done guys !

Oh dear.
The Devils were soundly beaten at Eastbourne on Saturday ( 27/05 ) in their NL encounter, going down 26 - 64.
A great night for Matt Bates, who scored 8 + 3, dropping just one point to the opposition. Connor Coles added 11 + 2.
For Devils, Boxall scored almost half their points with 12, but Henry Atkins ended with 1 + 1, and Richard Andrews, on his return to a track where he was once an Eagle, had just 1. The highs and lows that can happen in any sport are really brought home when comparing Richard's plight tonight with his paid maximum at home the previous evening.
That's Speedway folks !
(Note:- I amended this re Matt Bates. It was widely reported that he scored 11+3 but the man himself assures us it was 8 + 3 ).

A quick update.
No joy for Connor Coles as Newcastle edge out Scunthorpe 46 - 44 at home last Sunday. Two lasts and a fell/excluded, missing his scheduled third ride after the fall. No points again, sadly.
No Tyler Govier again as a severely depleted IOW Warriors are soundly thrashed 66 - 24 at Buxton, again on Sunday. The Hitmen fans have never had it so good !

Not much joy for Matt Bates tonight on a personal level, as he managed just 4 points, but this was no doubt tempered by the fact that the Eagles took the initial advantage with a 48 - 42 victory away to Kent in the NLKO Cup, and so must be favourites to progress. Matt suffered two falls, and is a tad 'secondhand' I gather, but a second in heat 14 secured the win.
I should also mention Nathan Stoneman, who scored an excellent 8 + 2 for the Kings. The Stoneman family are from Exeter, although I don't know if Nathan is still based here. Anyone confirm ?

Victory for the Devils away on the Island on Thursday night, 49 - 41, in the National Trophy, which I believe sees them top their group and progress.
A superb 11 + 1 tally for Henry Atkins, including two heat wins, from a total of five rides. A 4 + 1 return for Richard Andrews, who suffered a fall / exclusion in one outing.
Another zero for Connor Coles for Newcastle, who went down 39 -53 away at Ipswich. Had I read today that he was being replaced at Newcastle, I would not have been surprised, but instead I see that he has been released by Eastbourne. It would appear to be a question of the numbers game, as they have also replaced injury victim Kelsey Dugard.
Where will young Coles go ? Could he be heading for Plymouth ? Or the Isle of Wight ? Both could do with some strengthening, to be honest. We shall see.
