"CYCLE SPEEDWAY For the attention of THE SPORTS EDITOR
Report by Andy Collett.
The final Cycle speedway meeting of the 2006 season took place at the Cofton road wheel Centre over the weekend when the club hosted the South West Junior championship finals.
The Exeter club had already put the team championship out of reach of any other club in doing so retaining the title for a third consecutive year, but all the age groups in the grand prix series were in contention with double points up for grabs in the final round.
The first completion was the under eights were Scott Borrowdale won the ‘C’ final and Will Tidball won the ‘B’ final but Jack Herbert had to settle for second place in the ‘A’ final and runner up spot in the series to Newport’s James Robinson.
The under ten’s saw a similar pattern with wins from Kieran Lewis in the ‘C’ final and Lauren Hookway in the ‘B’ final but Joe Avery was an unlucky 4th in the ‘A’ final to finish overall second in the series to Weymouth’s Matthew Mildon.
In the Under 12’s Liam Borrowdale won the ‘D’ final while Aaron Coles won the ‘B’ final after an exclusion kept him out of the ‘A’ which was won by Sam Dart bringing Sam into third place in the series and leaving Aaron narrowly being relegated to a very credible second place overall in the series.
In the Under 14’s Tim Lake rode well to win the ‘B’ final but luck deserted Thomas Reed in the ‘A’ final after having won all his four races in the qualifiers had an uncharacteristic fall in the ‘A’ final leaving him in an overall second place in the series to Ben Mould of Newport.
In the under 16’s Craig Nethercott rode well in the qualifying races and earned himself grid one in the ‘A’ final and a chance to win the championship series but nerves got the better of him and an exclusion at the tapes for moving meant a third place overall.( Mod Edit-you bleedin plonker Craig-1000 miles over 8 months and you have a jelly wobbly at the tapes in the last race of the season and AT HOME TRACK AS WELL-what are we going to do with you eh boy?-Dad ;D---Don't tell me -you need a sponsor for next season--yawn...
A disappointing day for all those riders who just missed out on the top spot in their groups for the series but showed the strength in depth of the team to win the series for the third time and a pat on the back for the club and it’s members for the standard of the presentation achieved for the two big meetings they have held this year and puts them on the short list for the prestigious events of next year.
Note to editor
This is the last report for this season but thanks for your support in editing and printing my reports for the year and I look forward to starting again next March when the season starts and one in January for our presentation do-Andy Collett."
