Report from Andy Collett
Exeter Cycle Speedway club made a good start to the defence of their British League South West Junior Championship when they hosted the first round at their Cofton Road Track last weekend.
The Exeter club romped away from the outset and never looked back- winning in every age category to finish with 227 points nearly double the points of second place Newport who finished with 114.
In the under 8’s group Jack Herbert and Will Tidball both scored 15 points to get to the ‘A’ final of the grand prix round where they finished 4th and 3rd respectively. Other scores in the round were Oliver Lewis on 11 points, Shannon Borrowdale on 7 points and Jenson Heyde on 5 points.
A further 44 points were added to the team total in the under 10’s group where Lauren Hookway lead the way with 13 points to get into the ‘A’ final of the Grand prix and finished a creditable 3rd. Scot Borrowdale and Kieran Lewis scored 9 points each with Kieran winning the ‘B’ final Ryan Coles scored 8 points and Tenisha Heyde scored 5 points.
In the Under 12’s another 60 points were scored for the team with Aaron Coles leading the scores with 15 points and Joe Avery on 14 points both getting to the ‘A’ final in the Grand Prix series where Aaron Coles got off to a flying start to win with Joe coming 4th. Liam Borrowdale scored 10 points Charlie Jane Herbert scored 9 points and went on to win the ‘C’ final of the Grand Prix, Matt Trechmann scored 8 and Corey Heyde scored 4 points after falling in his 3rd race and was not able to continue racing for the rest of the meeting.
In the under 14’s Thomas Reed completed a 16 point maximum and went on to make it a clean sweep by winning the ‘A’ final in grand fashion with Sam Dart adding another 8 points to the total.
In the under 16’s group despite a tape exclusion in his first race (Mod note-After the last race exclusion of last season and the first of this one, the lads have started calling him Twitch instead of Craig-Nevs) Craig Nethercott recovered well to finish on 11 points along with Tim Lake and James Crampton. Craig went on to win the ‘B’ final of the Grand Prix Series.
In the final group of under 18’s Dominic McCrae was Exeter’s only competitor but he top scored in the round with 15 points and finished 2nd in the ‘A’ final of the Grand Prix. A good day for the club both on and off the track where the riders could not wish for a better start to carry into the next six rounds and the club set the presentation standard for the rest of the clubs to follow.
The final team scores were Exeter 227, Newport 114, Southampton 90, Poole 87, Weymouth 72, Oxford 18 and East Newport 16.
