After a very unusual Somerset meeting in that we were not freezing cold and we were not covered in shale we decided to stay and watch part of the second half.
Young Matt Bates looked calm and assured as he won the two races that we watched. In the first which only had three riders he missed the gate but without doing anything risky, simply powering round the corners, he moved up from third to second and then from second to first, looking as smooth as Leigh Adams.
In the second race that we watched he made the gate and dominated the race improving his time by a full second. Well done Matt, it was good to watch.
