The Exeter Aces raced in their 5th match of the season in another mouth watering south west league fixture. They faced the Hellingly Lions who hadn’t visited the Cofton Road circuit in quite a while. The first race of the day saw the visitors take a 6-4 heat advantage over the Aces but Exeter weren’t prepared to let the Lions overcome them again as Mark Reed and Craig Nethercott evened up the score line bringing the current standings to 10 points a piece. In heat 3 Hellingly gained a point over Exeter whilst the next 9 out of 10 heats resulted in shared points. The 14th heat of the afternoon provided a great race with Mark Reed and Sam Dart contributing to a 6-4 heat win which ultimately brought the score to a dead lock yet again. This speared on Hellingly’s riders to produce a special moment in the next heat, as they showed the Aces around their home circuit and gained a maximum heat advantage giving themselves a lead of 4 points going into the climax of the meeting. However, as the Lions pulled ahead Exeter were quickly brought the level terms yet again as Dominic McCrae and Thomas Reed got their own back showing that they could give as good as they get by thrashing the fellow rivals. Heat 17 took Hellingly into the lead again with a 6-4 win over Tim Lake and Mark Reed, and unfortunately there was no chance of a win for Exeter when the Lions scored another 6 points in the final heat, leaving the Aces to lose the match by a very small margin of 4 points. A well fought battle by the league newcomers. Final Score: Exeter 87, Hellingly 91.
The next match for the aces is the return leg of this fixture, away. Atleast a 4 hour journey up there and a 4 hour journey back for an hours worth of racing will be a big commitment for the younger riders of the team, but it shows we are loyal and we shall go up there to hopefully give it our best shot.
