Despite appearing to track a vastly superior line-up to the Warblers outfit, the Exeter Falcons slumped to a shock defeat today.
Trailing 50 - 10 after 10 heats, the Falcons managed a 3 - 3 in heat 11 but only after the winner had his appeal against a faulty silencer upheld. Three more maximums to the Warblers followed before more controversy in heat 15.
The Falcons number 1 stormed to a convincing victory to give his team a share of the points. Amid stormy scenes in the pits the Warblers' promoter referred the referee to a little-known clause in the rulebook which states that all riders taking part in heat 15 must have had their fuel subjected to a study by a team of environmental experts for a period of at least 12 months prior to the date of the meeting in question.
Exeter's rider could not produce the necessary written proof that his fuel had passed said criteria, and so was excluded by the referee, who awarded the race 5 - 1 to the Warblers.
A sad night indeed for the mighty Falcons. Only time will tell if this proves a fatal setback for the team.
( This tongue-in-cheek piece only thinly disguises my sadness after reading the article in today's Express & Echo, I'm afraid. Everyone had such high hopes that Haldon would get the go-ahead, and now the inference from said article is that we might be lucky to run in 2008, if ever. If I have misinterpreted the article, perhaps Mr. Trump could enlighten me by giving more information to the Forum, via Nevs ? Those of you who know me will also know that no-one is more passionate about getting the Falcons back on track than I am. Yes, I was wrong regarding our planning proposal being discussed next Monday by Teignbridge DC and I apologise for that, but I make no apologies otherwise. )
