Just returned from the Newport New Year Classic. Not the best track conditions today (even compared to ‘normal’ Queensway raceway – shock/horror - it had some dirt on it!). Well done to the perseverance of Tim Stone and company for putting this meeting on again. But was it just the fresh air and sunshine that enlivened our spirits and ensured we returned home glowing and happy? I think not.
Here were 12 men and true (why not 16!) willing to give it a go. And go they did (mostly). The track was such that it was testament to those brave enough (particularly after that nasty shower) to race. Several falls early in the meeting by Brent Werner (most unusual!?!) Ricky Ashworth and Richard Hall, twice (track not long enough for his wide sweeping moves except in one spectacular first corner) and other near misses including Chris Neath who bounced off the fence in a Simmo moment and regained his place almost immediately miraculously unscathed.
Bomber is surely in line for a grilling on 5th February after his gifting of this year’s trophy to a jubilant David Howe on the last; last bend of the fourth lap in the final. He seemed to enjoy the trophy presentation though when he shared his champers with his rivals (down their necks mostly). Leigh Lanham sensibly took his and retreated early….. Even Tim Stone had a soaking….
Form wise – particularly on a local note – Tim Webster from Ivybridge was the most improved rider for me on view and easily won the Conference racing overall. Shame he didn’t get recognition for his efforts.
Just wonderful to be there sharing the occasion with similar mad souls and thinking “not long now to till the season starts”.
Saw a few Birmingham supporters today and felt much envy at their imminent rebirth. However they have had to be so patient; hopefully the Falcons will not have to endure such dormancy.
Good to see a few old faces today also enjoying the outing!! ;D Although can't count DJ CJ who is young and had to miss the disco to return early for some cramming (Human Biology GCSE apparently - good luck!!) ;D
