As has been mentioned on The British Speedway forum it will be 30 years ago this week that former Falcon favourite Kevin Holden was tragically killed following an innocent enough looking tumble at Poole so soon after he left the Falcons. 30 years ago-Sure dont seem like it. What are your memories of Kevin and did Exeter run a memorial trophy for him? Whole BSF thread can be read on the link below. Makes you think this week doesnt it. www.speedway-forum.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=33636

I have in my proud dusty possession a cassette tape of the Express and Echo Spring Classic produced by Tape-a-Sport of Ferndown, Dorset 1974 when our local hero Kevin Holden won with 14 points and I was there; thrilled that our Falcon won against the quality of Olsen and Boocock (I think – sound quality is terrible and memory too..sadly….). Tony Lethbridge will no doubt correct me. Such a big night at the County Ground.
Kevin was my favourite; even in the company of Ivan - just seemed to be like the boy next door, but with guts and a real team guy.
I disappeared from speedway a couple of years later when studying and was so shocked when a friend asked me if I knew about Kevin being killed at Poole. I thought then what a cruel sport; never thought it would come into my life again 20 years on and give such pleasure and excitement again (thought it was just a teenage phase).
Can’t believe though that was 30 years ago.

OK detail (as Tony would expect).. 1. Kevin Holden 70.8 seconds 2. Malcolm Simmons) 3. John Boulger ) after run off. Kevin Holder won £60, Malcolm Simmons £20, John Boulder £10 and Nigel Boocock won £10 for most exciting rider of night. Don't know where Olsen was..... ::)probably planning some GP track in the next century..... Kevin beat Martin Ashby in the last heat to win. On interview he seemed very humble. Said it had been a hectic night, but his bike had been"going good" and he felt good too. The interviewer described heat 20 as the best speedway he had ever seen. Kevin said he had hit the last bend fence and gained grip to beat Ashby which gained him the title. Although quite shy and surpised to find himself the winner; he seemd keenly aware throughout the meeting of his points position and what needed to be achieved. Spent my pocket money on this memorabilia; priceless.

Incredible to think it was so long ago. It really is the only downside of our beloved sport - too many have suffered terrible injuries, and even paid the ultimate price, putting on the show we all thrill to watch.
